Reading  
Students practiced Author's Purpose this week.  We are now working on an author's purpose to persuade, which we don't practice as often as the purpose of informational or entertainment writing.  Through this we read about a debate going back to the Titanic.  Whether to restore and conserve artifacts on the ocean floor or leave them rest in peace, which is Robert Ballard's argument.  After students take notes on both sides and watch a video regarding this, they will write their own persuasive paragraph based on their views and using facts from their readings and video.

Rock Cycle -  where do all these rocks come from?  How important are rocks and the things that are made from rocks.

Social Studies

Next week we will be continuing our study of Wisconsin's role in the Civil War (ch. 7) during the first part of the week. Later on in the week the students will have some class time to work on their ABC state book. It is important that the children keep up with the state book. By the end of business Friday, they should have 15-16 letters completed. They will receive an update on Monday of how many they have completed.



Math

This week we will continue with Geometry by learning how to construct angles using a protractor.  Then we will move into a review of plotting point on a coordinate plane. Next up, we will analyze the components of a circle, constructing a circle, and determining the circumference of a circle.  

Language Arts/Writing

This is the time of the year when a number of former St. Monica graduates are looking at make the "big" college decision.  Thus to help you out a bit, we have started thinking about the fall of 2026.  Where and why would you like to go to college?  No student will be choosing a school because of sports. They will conduct lots of research about a school, and their academic programs.  

Religion
Joan's Rome - We are looking at what a Catholic journalist covers in her beat in Rome. We are seeing that Joan writes about many things including sports where she touches on our relationship with God.

I still watch random acts of kindness happen in our class every day.  Thank you for encouraging your child to see the goodness in our lives.

Finally, we are also trying to finish the series of books called "Island."  A group of boys and girls stranded on an island trying to work together to get off in the face of multiple adversities.

Reading
This week students will complete the historical fiction novel I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic. This will take us a couple weeks as we do a little research together on the Titanic simultaneously with the novel. We will watch some short 1-2 minute scenes from the Titanic movie to get a better understanding of this historical time; what people wore, how the maiden voyage began and the excitement surrounding it all.  We will also watch clips of Robert Ballard, the scientist who discovered the Titanic on the ocean floor.
Throughout the novel, students will identify with a passenger on the Titanic's journey.  Students will receive a "ticket" on the White Star Line with their name, age, which class they traveled and where they are from.  We will use this information to accumulate information for a narrative biography they will write about that person.

Grammar:  Unit 4: Adverbs
Vocabulary:  Unit 14 Vocabulary test Friday.  Kids will bring books home on Wednesday so they have 2 days to look over their words.
Writing:  More Narrative Writing:  Students began a 5 paragraph story about themselves.  They will use a web pre-write and work on their rough drafts and editing of their own work.  This will lead to peer editing and a final draft.

Religion
Session 16:  Celebrating Reconciliation 



The Iditarod has started.   The students each received a couple of mushers that they have looked up and know a little about.  
Each student can go on and track their musher, on Iditarod.com.  username Lastrace  password:  MrBdogs
Students can track mushers on the GPS tracking.
