Spring is here! The weather will eventually catch up.  It is time for that last push to get us through the year.  Let's finish strong!

New flowers in bloom this spring!
The bright Sunnysus Daysova.
A cell phone favorite, Moustachen Emoja.
Of course, what would spring be like if we did not see the Footballius Spikeio in bloom?

Reading
Students are working on the novel The Family Under the Bridge.  This is a realistic fiction Newbery honor book about a family who becomes homeless.  The story takes place in the heart of Paris, France.  They are working on vocabulary and comprehension throughout.

Science

The state plants project is completed and it was amazing to see the amount of information collected by the students and their different states.  As a nation, we produce a lot of food.  Your child can show their presentation by visiting their google account.
This next week we are starting to look at the rock cycle and will go back and visit many of our basic elements which of course are, "It is in you!"

Social Studies

Next week we will be continuing our study of Wisconsin's role in the Civil War (ch. 7) during the first part of the week. Later on in the week the students will have some class time to work on their ABC State Book. I did a check-in with the students on Friday, and most have met the target number for letters (8), but some are a little behind. It is very important for them to meet the deadlines.

Math

This week we will move into Geometry by first exploring 3 Dimensional Figures. Students will identify faces, vertices, and edges.  We will then take a look at 2 Dimensional Figures.  Students will  determine whether a figure is Open and Closed.  They will then classify polygons based on sides. We will finish the week by reviewing how to plot points on a coordinate plane.

Language Arts/Writing

This is the time of the year when a number of former St. Monica graduates are looking at make the "big" college decision.  Thus to help you out a bit, we have started thinking about the fall of 2026.  Where and why would you like to go to college?  No student will be choosing a school because of sports. They will conduct lots of research about a school, and their academic programs.

Religion

We just finished a movie about a nun who spent her entire life serving the would be pope, Pope Paul the XII and his role is saving many lives in Germany.

Finally, we are also trying to finish the series of books called "Island."  A group of boys and girls stranded on an island trying to work together to get off in the face of multiple adversities.

Reading
This week we read the nonfiction text, The Titanic...Lost and Found.  This will follow with the historical fiction novel I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic. This will take us a couple weeks as we do a little research together on the Titanic simultaneously with the novel. We will watch some short 1-2 minute scenes from the Titanic movie to get a better understanding of this historical time; what people wore, how the maiden voyage began and the excitement surrounding it all.  We will also watch clips of Robert Ballard, the scientist who discovered the Titanic on the ocean floor.
Throughout the novel, students will identify with a passenger on the Titanic's journey.  Students will receive a "ticket" on the White Star Line with their name, age, which class they traveled and where they are from.  We will use this information to accumulate information for a narrative biography they will write about that person.
