This Wednesday is our field trip to Holy Hill.  Students are asked to wear comfortable clothing especially shoes.  They should bring a bag lunch, and they may choose to bring money in order to purchase items at the gift shop.

On Friday, the students will watch the annual presentation of the Wax Museum.

On June 7, we will be heading to LaserTag Adventure World for the end of the year field trip.  Each student must have a waiver filled out on line.  Please see below the link:

Reading
We are working on the novel, Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli.  This is a Newbery award winning novel.  Look for the book to come home for reading homework throughout the next two weeks.
Students are working on comprehension, context clues and literary elements of plot throughout the novel.  There are various themes throughout this book, racial prejudice, family, friendship, survival...we will discuss and work with them all.

Science
Nice presentations - on minerals and rocks in our lives.  We also look at the question of are these rocks important in our lives with the balance of mining them.

We will look at the weather.    Did you know that there have been over 300 tornados in the U.S. so far this year?

From Joan's Rome

Hi Mike,

What a FUN time I had the other day in your classroom! I enjoyed every minute and every question and power point presentation! Kudos to all of you!

I will do a blog about that morning when I get back to Rome and will post photos. I am wondering if you could send me some photos of the power point presentations that I could put on my blog....and maybe even of the ones we did not have time to do. My readers will LOVE this!

Again, thanks a million for hosting me....tell your class I said CIAO and am in awe of their talent and intelligence and technical skill! Keep up the good work.

Tell them I got my PhD ....if they know what that is!.....from my Dad.....Passion...Hard work.....Dreams!

Blessings,
Joan

Finally, we are also trying to finish the series of books called "Island."  A group of boys and girls stranded on an island trying to work together to get off in the face of multiple adversities.

Students will also practice Author's Purpose this week.  One focus of author's purpose is to persuade, which we don't practice as often as the purpose of informational or entertainment writing.  We will read about a debate going back to the Titanic.  Whether to restore and conserve artifacts on the ocean floor or leave them rest in peace, which is Robert Ballard's argument.  After students take notes on both sides and watch a video regarding this, they will write their own persuasive paragraph based on their views and using facts from their readings and video.
