Mr. Bradford

Reading
Students are completing their Journey's lesson, a historical fiction story Riding Freedom.  This week they will begin the historical fiction novel Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan. It is told from the perspective of 12-year old Anna living on the prairie in the 1800s.  It won the 1986 Newbery medal. Students will work on comprehension and vocabulary throughout this unit.
Please look for graded rubrics to come home Tuesday for your child's Titanic writing and book report.
*Reading Logs due Tuesday

Spelling: Lesson 17-Words with final j and s sound

Science

We are looking at plants/crops in each of the students' different states.  Everything from corn to maple syrup.  Next, is how big is an acre and how many acres of this planted are grown in this state.

Social Studies

The children will complete the letter "B" for bird. Then we will be back in their textbook and continuing with Chapter 6 on immigration. We will be reading seven mini-biographies which will give them ample opportunity to become acquainted with real Wisconsin residents past and present.

Math
We have added and subtracted fractions with like and unlike denominators.  Next week, we will add and subtract with mixed numbers.  On Thursday, we will have a test that covers adding and subtracting fractions. In the book, this is chapters 11 and 12.   The test will only be on adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators including whole numbers.  The students will be expected to simplify.

Language Arts/Writing

Working on compare contrast paper.
We are still working our way through the adjectives to describe our nouns test on Thursday.

Religion

This week is our mass.

During this Lenten season, we are looking at practicing kindness.  I ask the class to come in early at least once to help me out with the simple act of kindness.  I try to do this before school at about 7:30.  If you are able, I understand the limitations, to bring your child in at 7:30, please ask them to sign up with me for a day.

Additionally, we are looking at other acts of kindness, thus if you know of someone that could use prayers or letters, please let me know.

Other stuff -  We are reading a series called Island, about a group of children that have to survive many things including being on a deserted island.
In 8 days, we will participate in The Last Great Race.

Religion
We left unit 3 last week to focus on the Lenten season in preparation of Ash Wednesday.  We discussed the practices of prayer, fasting and alms giving.  Ask your child what they are giving up, how they are praying more and what alms giving they chose. This month we will continue to talk about this and read the Bible as we walk through Jesus' Journey, beginning with His 40 days in the desert.

Every day the students are coming in and talking about what happened last night in the Olympics. This is so fun to listen too.
We are starting on plants and will eventually tie things together with Soc. Studies state project.

Social Studies

The children will complete the letter "C for capital." We will probably do one more letter together and then return to chapter 6 about immigration in Wisconsin. Keep in mind the date March 7 when Mr. Bradford and I will be taking the fourth graders to the Riveredge Nature Center in Newberg for a program entitled "Maple Sugarin'. More to come later on the trip.

Catholic Schools Week was a Blast!
What a great week for the students and staff.  Thank you to all the families that helped organize many of the events and who helped spoil the teachers all week too!  We are ALL so blessed.

Mr. Bradford

Reading

Last week interrupted our schedule quite a bit, so students have just completed the rough draft for their narrative biography of the Titanic.  We will work on final drafts this week along with the book report essay. Lots of writing to do!

Spelling: Lesson 16 Journeys; words with /k/, /nk/, /kw/

Science
I apologize for the song about animal parts.  At least 1/2 of my students were singing the song this morning before class.  I am still trying to define that line between funny and annoying.

Invertebrate Olympics start this week!  Pick your animal and event.  Personally, I would stay away from the "yummy" phylum as they tend to get eaten up at the finish line.

The countdown has started, Feb. 9th.

Social Studies

The children will complete the final copy of the "About the Author" page for their ABC state report book, and we will also start chapter 6 - "They Came to Wisconsin and They're Still Coming:  Immigration and Settlement. The chapter focuses on vocabulary and the push-pull nature of migration and immigration. Seven mini-biographies serve as the principal content pages of the chapter, giving students ample opportunity to become acquainted with real Wisconsin residents past and present.

Math
We will continue to use Least Common Multiples to create Least Common Denominators in order to compare and order fractions.  We will do a review of Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions.  We will then move into changing decimals into fractions and then simplifying the answer.  This will provide an opportunity to review simplifying fractions.

Language Arts/Writing

Working on compare contrast paper.
using adjectives to describe our nouns!

Religion

St. Paul's conversion was this past week.  A little more dramatic than Brett Farve's conversion to becoming a Viking, but change is never easy unless we have faith.

This week we will start looking at what people must do to convert to Catholicism.

We periodically listen to or watch a video on the Parish's website, Formed.com

Other stuff -  We are reading a series called Island, about a group of children that have to survive many things including being on a deserted island.
In 43 days, we will participate in The Last Great Race.

We are trying to figure out how we can watch some animals starting Feb. 9th.

4B Mrs. Kuhnmuench

Valentine's Day will be celebrated on February 13th.  Kids are to bring a Valentine to all their classmates.  We will exchange during our party.

Reading

We continue to work on our realistic fiction book report essay.  Most of this will be worked on in the classroom.  Some of the final draft writing may come home.
We will also begin a new novel.

Vocabulary:  Unit chapter 10 this week.  Unit 10 test will be Friday.
Writing:
Friendly letters were graded and edited and sent out Friday to their loved ones.  Hopefully this will brighten up their day!

Compare and Contrast paper:  Students edited their rough drafts.  I am now going through them and checking them.  This week they will complete it with the final draft and cover page.  The rubric will go home in Monday folders the following week.

Religion
We are on Unit 3 in our religion books:  The Church, Our Community in the Spirit.  Session 11:  The People of God.  How we are a part of Jesus' community, the Church.  We become members of the church through the Sacraments of Initiation:  Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist

Happy Memorial Day!  Enjoy the long weekend. This is the LAST blog for the year.  All other communications will be sent via email...
