Students are completing their Journey's lesson, a historical fiction story Riding Freedom. This week they will begin the historical fiction novel Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan. It is told from the perspective of 12-year old Anna living on the prairie in the 1800s. It won the 1986 Newbery medal. Students will work on comprehension and vocabulary throughout this unit.
Please look for graded rubrics to come home Tuesday for your child's Titanic writing and book report.

Spelling: Lesson 17-Words with final j and s sound
Science
We are starting on plants and will eventually tie things together with Soc. Studies state project.
Social Studies
The children will complete the letter "C for capital." We will probably do one more letter together and then return to chapter 6 about immigration in Wisconsin. Keep in mind the date March 7 when Mr. Bradford and I will be taking the fourth graders to the Riveredge Nature Center in Newberg for a program entitled "Maple Sugarin'. More to come later on the trip.
Math
We will continue to use Least Common Multiples to create Least Common Denominators in order to compare and order fractions. We will do a review of Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions. We will then move into changing decimals into fractions and then simplifying the answer. This will provide an opportunity to review simplifying fractions.
Language Arts/Writing
Working on compare contrast paper.
We are still working our way through the adjectives to describe our nouns!
Religion
During this Lenten season, we are looking at practicing kindness. I ask the class to come in early at least once to help me out with the simple act of kindness. I try to do this before school at about 7:30. If you are able, I understand the limitations, to bring your child in at 7:30, please ask them to sign up with me for a day.
Additionally, we are looking at other acts of kindness, thus if you know of someone that could use prayers or letters, please let me know.
Other stuff - We are reading a series called Island, about a group of children that have to survive many things including being on a deserted island.
In 15 days, we will participate in The Last Great Race.

This book is about a Parisian hobo named Armand who reluctantly befriends a homeless family-a mother and three children- allowing them to share his space under the bridge in Paris. He soon becomes attached to the children and determined to provide a home for them. Students will work on comprehension, vocabulary and character webs throughout this unit.

Every day the students are coming in and talking about what happened last night in the Olympics. This is so fun to listen too.

We left unit 3 last week to focus on the Lenten season in preparation of Ash Wednesday. We discussed the practices of prayer, fasting and alms giving. Ask your child what they are giving up, how they are praying more and what alms giving they chose. This month we will continue to talk about this and read the Bible as we walk through Jesus' Journey, beginning with His 40 days in the desert.
